If I had a dollar everytime this question is asked, I'd be... :)
Whenever this question is asked you will get all the idealistic reasons: change the world, I want to make a difference, a calling, the greatest profession in the world… although these reasons would make a nursing instructor proud, but the real reason we pick nursing as a profession is as unique as each individual and 99.99% of the time it deals with $$$ MONEY. And why should nursing be any different than any other profession, (i.e. law, medicine, real estate).
Our primary concerns are always love of: self, family, community, profession, always nearly in that order. The truth is if nursing did not allow us to meet our most basic needs we would not be nurses or aspire to be one.
I may be biased, but nursing is the only profession that allows you have your cake and eat it too. Whether you are intellectually, physically, materially, or spiritual inclined, nursing allows you to meet your goals and still be able to pay the bills and build wealth.
StabilityAccording to the department of labor employment for nurses is expected to grow by 23% by 2016. Putting it simply, as long as there is the probability of people getting sick and growing older there is a need for nurses.
SatisfactionWhat ever dreams, goals, interest, needs nursing is a rewarding discipline.
Upward Mobility
With the average nurse earning close to $60,000/year the propensity to build wealth is just tremendous.
FlexibilityMost professions don’t allow you the liberty to pick where, when, who you work with or what you do. The wonderful opportunity nursing affords is if you have an interest there is probably a field in nursing that covers
